REINSW: Strengthening Support for Domestic Violence Survivors

18 September 2024

REINSW is dedicated to supporting our members in their vital roles, particularly in assisting them when they encounter Domestic Violence (DV) situations in the course of their work. Recognising the crucial part property managers can play in helping DV survivors, we have intensified our efforts in this area over the past two years.

In 2022, we conducted a comprehensive survey, 20 Questions for the REINSW – Property Manager Response to Domestic and Family Violence Re-Homing, which provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities property managers face when assisting DV survivors.

These findings have shaped our efforts to develop targeted resources and training that enable property managers to respond effectively and compassionately to those affected by DV, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to empowering members to positively impact their communities.

Our Recent DV Work and Available Resources:

  • Webinars: We have hosted two impactful webinars, Domestic Violence in Tenancies and Assisting Tenants Who Have Left Domestic Violence. These sessions provided essential guidance on how to manage these sensitive situations effectively.
  • Article: Read our published article Domestic violence in tenancies about the key role that property managers play during and after DV situations between tenants and landlords
  • DV Toolkit: We have created a special NSW Domestic Violence Toolkit for agents to download which offers valuable information to support those dealing with domestic and family violence in their real estate duties. This toolkit aims to provide as much information to those affected, in the form of contacts for support organisations as well as available financial support grants and payments.
  • Training course: We now offer the Safer Homes - Understanding Domestic Violence in NSW Rental Properties course, designed to equip property managers with the knowledge and tools needed to support tenants affected by DV.
  • DV Safe Space Badge: We are excited to announce the launch of our DV Safe Space digital badge for those who have completed the Safer Homes course. This badge symbolises a commitment by agents to creating a safer environment for DV survivors and raises awareness about the critical role property managers can play. We encourage course attendees to proudly display the digital badge on their website, email signatures, and social media profiles to demonstrate their dedication.

Continuous initiatives

The REINSW Property Management Chapter Committee plays a vital role in supporting and guiding the real estate industry by addressing key issues, sharing best practices, and providing valuable insights, into dealing effectively with domestic violence situations. The committee develops strategies and resources to help property managers respond sensitively and effectively, ensuring they are equipped to handle complex challenges and deliver excellent service to their tenants and landlords.
