REINSW REQUESTS REMOVAL OF MINISTER

17 July 2026

MEDIA RELEASE: The Real Estate Institute of New South Wales (REINSW) has written to NSW Premier Chris Minns requesting Minister for Better Regulation and Fair Trading Anoulack Chanthivong be removed from the portfolio which oversees the regulation of the real estate industry.

In calling for his removal, REINSW CEO Tim McKibbin says the Minister has steadfastly refused to engage with the industry - the most important revenue-wise in the state - including on the need to implement more appropriate education standards for those seeking a career in real estate.

“The Minister expects real estate professionals to deliver compliant, quality services to consumers. He expects them to have knowledge of 22 legislative instruments. This year alone, he expects them to absorb 449 legislative changes, each with their own complexities, and which carry severe penalties for non-compliance,” Mr McKibbin says.

“At the same time, he supports people being able to enter the industry with less than week’s education. Despite repeated attempts, he refuses to engage with the industry to address this obvious disconnect.

“The attrition rate for new entrants to the industry is 80% in the first year. The Minister is failing both consumers and those people seeking a career in real estate.

“REINSW urges the Premier to appoint an experienced person to this important portfolio in the interests of consumers across the state. After all, real estate is an industry which touches the lives of everyone,” he says.
